Jackie — Nothing Like Detroit

Shy People Mix

08.07 2021

House, Techno dance music (and even Electronic music) have always been dominated by men. The emergence of music producer/DJ/label manager K-HAND in the 1990s has become a widely spread example of black women having the same ability to control the field. On August 3, K-HAND, who was awarded the title of "First Lady of Detroit" by the Detroit City Council, passed away at the age of 56.

Her real name is Kelli Hand. When she was young, she wandered around the New York nightclub Paradise Garage when Larry Levan was the resident DJ there. That kind of cheerful, primitive, open-minded black music energy deeply influenced K-HAND. She later became the resident DJ of the Detroit club Zippers. In 1990, she founded her own record company, named Acacia Records after a street where she had lived in Detroit before. With the help of many members of the Detroit Techno second wave group UR, K-HAND released her own music works. In the 1990s, it appeared in famous European factories such as! K7, Warp and Tresor. Despite being in Detroit, her musical influence is more from the Chicago and New York scenes. From the resume of K-HAND, you can see that House and Techno are not separated.

On August 4th, Paul Johnson, who inspired the aesthetics of K-HAND Chicago dance music, passed away at the age of 50 after a battle with Covid-19.

While the legendary Chicago House legend started to become a dance music producer in 1987, he was also hit by a stray bullet and forced to start using a wheelchair. Relying on a series of works such as the Ghetto House tracks that released by Dance Mania, a famous underground label in Chicago, he became a key figure in the House scene in the mid-1990s. Daft Punk is also one of his famous followers. Paul's an injured leg was amputated in 2003 and the other leg was amputated in a car accident in 2010, but he still continues to be a DJ around the world. Paul never give up, maybe music has saved him already, "It’s all about the music."

In order to commemorate the pioneers of dance music in Detroit (and Chicago), we invited Jackie, an old friend and a vinyl Techno DJ, to give us a new mix set. It's positive like the American dance music. Since there is no recording equipment due to time rush, Jackie uses Ableton software to operate.

Jackie is a DJ/producer/digger we met in Beijing, but he moved to Shanghai 6 years ago. He started his DJ career in 2005. Served as the producer/host of the FM101.8 music program "Street Jam" of the Central People's Broadcasting Station. He has independently produced a series of radio programs "Ghost In The Machine", introducing Techno/ House music under the influence of the city of Detroit.
