Women’s Self-Portraits & Parties in Melbourne

02.04 2026

Jacquie Meng: Clock Face (2024)

Jacquie Meng (b.1998, Hangzhou) works with painting, sound, and installation. Her work redefines diasporic cultural identity beyond national and geographical specificities, rather seeing it as unfixed. Through consideration of posthumanism, performativity, and the migration of objects and imagery between cultures, Meng  explores the ways that identity can be reflected beyond the body: it can be revealed through objects, patterns, chance encounters, idiosyncrasies, as well as through embedded cultural and social practices.

The Mirror of "Her"

SP: Your paintings often feature a vibrant, fearless female figure who blurs gender boundaries. To me, you share that same bubbly, easy-going personality. Is she an idealized self-portrait? Is this "fearless" stance a specific energy you want to empower contemporary women with?

JM: The people in my paintings are first and foremost drawn from myself, but they are representative of something more than just myself. They are representative of femininity and the aesthetics which are often associated with that, such as cuteness and doll-like-ness. These are aesthetics which I find powerful rather than just soft and gentle. What seems bubbly and cute is also a way through which I can express strangeness, darkness and the uncanny, which I find interesting.

Lineage & Dialogue

Who shaped your early perception of "beauty" and "individuality"? Do you see your art as a cross-cultural conversation with women living in entirely different contexts?

my mum, my grandma and charlies angels.  Femininity is always present in my art and it is always evolving and changing in subtle and not so subtle ways.  I think there's visual elements to femininity that resonate with everyone even if in different ways.

—— Jacquie Meng
I think painting is a visual language that communicates beyond words.  It shouldnt have set-in-stone interpretations.

Parties in Melbourne

Music and Installation

You recently worked on an installation for Kia’s un:send festival?

I made a wheel of fortune and apple sculptures in collaboration with Claire de Carteret. It was really fun to make something for a festival setting and not for a gallery, similar to why I enjoy party flyers. The wheel was interactive and it was fun to hear people telling me the questions they were asking it over the weekend.

Party Culture Keywords

If you had to describe Melbourne’s party scene in three words, what would they be? What is it about this local "soil" that heals you the most?

Crazy stupid fun. It is healing and there is always something to do and someone to do it with :)

The Art of Small Talk

Melbourne thrives on small talk even on dance floor. How do you view this seemingly shallow yet subtle social ritual? Which one do you dread hearing the most?

I am bad at small talk but the one thing I dread hearing the most is (When im accidentally doing my resting bitch face): "Are you okay?"
