夏夜听山音 独行心幽宁
《Xia Ye》的音乐创作萌芽于 2020 年 2 月初，Night Swimmer 在家乡湖北黄冈的封城生活经历——一次雨后夜游山郊之旅。在对“蚊虫山”的攀爬探索之中，闲暇自在的步伐带来了长久遗失的旷野独处之乐趣，自然慰藉创造了新的心灵景观。
在随后的两年时间里，这一方隐地不断随着外部世界开始的质变而波荡扭曲。日常的苦闷与琐碎、对超验主义的理想与爱，与脑海中的夜行记忆嘈杂交错，汇聚成新专辑的叙事碎片。
《Xia Ye》于传统中国乐器声色和幽暗旋律中勾连回忆与现在；在模拟电子、采样及人声之中溯源世纪末 New Age 遗风；闪现的 90 年代摇滚气质以及乡间神秘仪式的声响，脱离繁与简的秩序，又藏匿着惊悚与惆怅。
本专辑并非对当下的精神困境之解药，它是对自然慰藉、个体危机与精神变迁的一次探索。每个人都可以在这块悠然旷野感获某种意义，于现实风暴之中寻得新的安宁。
“The comforting sounds from a night trip into a mountain that eased your mind.”
The album, Xia Ye, is a mid-covid account of Night Swimmer’s encounter with the chaotic bitterness that was the early outbreaks. It collects and accentuates an experience of a nighttime visit to a hometown mountain two years ago, while covid started to rage in Hubei province. The wholesome solace of nature, for once, eased all of his mortal befuddlement and gloom; A spiritual terrain was formed. As a metaphor for this journey, the symbols behind the title bring up a duality of meaning: Xia, in Chinese, could either mean “summer” or “idle,” while Ye means “night” or “wilderness.”
In the following two years, the project continued to collect moments alike. Yet, real-life turmoils and tragedies never ceased. All of this caused him to gravitate towards his short, reclusive stay in the wilderness two years ago. In an attempt to delineate this constantly transforming spiritual landscape, this album tapped into the sounds of 90s New Age music, his hometown’s local rituals for the dead, and also employed both virtual and physical instruments, colored by a nostalgic touch. Xia Ye absorbs both western sounds and Chinese melodies, conjuring up a picturesque landscape of familiarity, intimacy, and volatility.
Xia Ye is not an antidote for the spiritual crisis of the contemporary world. It is a memoir of the transformation of one’s inner self. But, these sounds and melodies can hopefully help achieve some meaning and peace for those who are also finding themselves lost amid the realistic, grueling storms spreading worldwide.
