At the age of five, Shy People gradually comes to understand their personality—introverted yet cheerful, gentle yet with a quirky side. People are always complex, aren’t they? They enjoy quiet cities while also loving the lively outdoors; they chase after intriguing new sounds while being captivated by the energy that builds up on the dance floor.
In search of an unprecedented self-portrait, Shy People discovers small village that is forgotten by time in the vast universe of the internet. There, they meet a young magician named Tego, who possesses the unique talent to manipulate colors at will.
Tego has always been fascinated by the shades and nuances around him. Like Shy People, he is always on an adventure—navigating between the past and future with the help of an ancient grimoire to explore the mysteries of color. Tego’s ultimate goal is to find the legendary “Color of the Soul,” a mystical hue that, according to legend, can reveal the deepest truths of the universe.

This time, Tego creates two characters that reflect both the multifaceted nature of Shy People and the charming aspects of Beijing and Chengdu, two vibrant Rave cities. What do you think? Taking this opportunity, we captured the true creator behind the magician, Tego Gratos, and let him select 20 of his favorite works with a bias in the real universe of Paris, as well as answer a few curious questions.
Tego Gratos’ Favorite 20 Works

Shy People: How did you come to like Rave music?
Tego Gratos: I went to my first rave party in 2001, a big underground party in a large shed in a Paris suburb. As a young teenager, it made a big impression on me and I immediately dived into Hard Techno and Hardcore music after that. Later I kept exploring and discovering various electronic music styles.

What memorable party experiences have left a strong impression on you?
I have a lot of great memories of partying with friends in beautiful places in France. We have these traditional sound-systems gatherings called Multison or Teknival where we recreate a small techno city in the French countryside for a few days. I've always loved these. But one of my most memorable parties was happening for the 20th anniversary of the Heretik soundsystem and it took place at the Olympia, a legendary concert hall in Paris. It was a beautiful moment seeing underground techno culture on the same stage that saw people like Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour.

Are you currently living in Paris?
Yeah, I've been living in Paris since I was born, I love this city and its soul. There are a lot of preconceived ideas about Paris but if you step out of the tourist circuit you might find a vibrant underground culture. I don't party as often now but I still keep an eye on the scene and punctually pop over for my favorite DJs and sound systems.

What are your favorite music? Can you recommend some personal choices?
While I listen to many different music styles, I think my all-time favorite Dj is still one of the first Djs I saw live in a small underground rave. It's Manu le malin aka The Driver. I especially love it when he mixes some slow-tempo heavy Hardcore Techno.

Your designs have many cartoon elements. What cartoons left the deepest impression on you during your childhood?
What I like the most is finding a cartoon that I had forgotten about, the nostalgic feeling it brings is at the center of my work. Then I like to take that piece of memory and pull it out of its context to use it in a different way and deflect its initial purpose. It's very close to the sample principle in music.

Besides cartoons, what else has influenced your design? Street graffiti, right?
Yes of course graffiti culture, skate/snowboard culture, techno/rave culture, tattoo culture, and many other 80's/90's subcultures but also artistic movements like Dadaism, surrealism, pop art, or psychedelic art influenced me a lot.

From your designs, it seems you have a fondness for 90s rave culture. What draws you to the visuals of that era?
I don't know exactly, it's like finding the right shoes that fit perfectly your foot. The mix of roughness and fun, multiculturalism, the creativity. A lot of things resonate with my personality and I feel incredibly lucky for living at the right time to experience this culture.

What is the reason for choosing anonymity? In other words, what role does Tego Gratos play for you?
I find it more comfortable for many reasons, mostly the freedom of creation it allows is the most important. Also, it's like putting a mask on, it makes a little switch in personality and allows you to party even harder haha. But it's also a part of the subcultures that influenced me like graffiti and techno music where it's rare to find an artist using its real name.
